Second Stage Women’s Shelter

Second Stage Shelter provides women and women with children that are leaving abusive relationships with subsidized apartments for up to 2 years. We provide additional security, ongoing programs and support around violence and abuse.

The program has 13 subsidized shelter units that are short term up to 24 months. Second Stage Shelter is considered the next step in a continuum of services to support women and their children in living a life free of violence, moving from an abusive, unsafe environment into safe independent living.

During your time at Second Stage Shelter, the support workers will work with you to determine what your service plan looks like. This includes conducting danger assessments, helping with safety planning, and assisting with goal setting. They will also ensure access to the on-site Child Development Centre and its services. Additionally, they offer individual and group support sessions, along with free trauma counseling for any children over 3 years old.

Supporting Families and Pets in Crisis:
The Animal Safe Haven Program

At Waypoints, we understand that when individuals and families seek shelter to escape abusive relationships, their pets often face similar challenges. To support those who are fleeing family violence, we are pleased to partner with the Fort McMurray SPCA and their Animal Safe Haven (ASH) program.

The ASH program offers temporary shelter and care for pets whose owners are in crisis, including those who are accessing Waypoints' shelter services. This program provides a safe and secure environment for companion animals, ensuring they are well cared for while families focus on their own healing and recovery.

If you are seeking shelter at Waypoints and need assistance with your pet, we encourage you to reach out to the Fort McMurray SPCA. Their Animal Safe Haven program can provide up to 30 days of temporary care for your pet, including food and supplies, while you receive the support you need. Families are also kept informed with regular updates from the SPCA’s Program Coordinator.

We are grateful for our partnership with the Fort McMurray SPCA, which allows us to offer this additional support for those we serve.
